Lisa's Story(Galaxy Isle)
Lisa's Story
In the Spring of 2009, I started working with a local hospital in Brooklyn, New York, where I had the pleasure of meeting some incredibly brave, and unfortunately physically ill children and adults. I started out reading to them, bringing in games for us to play, and music from my iPod. One day, a young lady, named Lisa, who had been so badly burned in a fire that she lost all of her limbs, and I were having a conversation about the Internet. She was fascinated with it, but didn't know how she'd be able to take advantage of it now that she was unable to work a mouse or keyboard. So, on one of our visits, I brought in my laptop, worked the mouse for her, and showed her my passion for SecondLife. We spent a couple hours making an avatar, laughing and running around various appropriate sims. For those couple hours and for the first time since the fire, Lisa had legs to run on, hands to touch with, and a consuming distraction that left her constant pain behind. I was so moved by the power SL could have on someone like Lisa, that I started working with other people at the hospital in a similar way. Before long, the idea came to me to build a fun and educational sim in SL where the individuals in need could come with a mentor or teacher, play, explore, and learn.
On the occasion of my SL partner, Seth Stratten's birthday, I created a Wildlife Park as a nod to Seth's incredible knowledge and enjoyment of all manner of animal life. The two ideas converged and soon the Stratten Wildlife Park was built and host to individuals in hospitals across the continental U.S. and their mentors leveraging the park's focus on wildlife education. Private tours are held on a regular basis through scheduled appointments with teachers and mentors and to date many patient's lives have been touched by the medium of SL and this very special park.
Recently, the sim became host to a Venetian-Village-styled event space and on August 17th, 2010, the Stratten Wildlife Park and Galaxy Isle Venetian Village will be open to the public and celebrate the sim's overall mission with a Grand Opening. Among the evening's festivities, slated to run from 5:00pm - 7:30pm SLT, Mankind Tracer, an extraordinarily generous and gifted musician, will be performing in celebration of the launch.
Galaxy Isle and the Stratten Wildlife Park stand as a testament to the power of healing possible through SecondLife. Please join us in telling Lisa's story and perhaps be inspired to work with special people like Lisa at a hospital near you.
Sincerely,
Emile Sands

WELCOME TO GALAXY ISLE
WELCOME TO GALAXY ISLE
:::OUR MISSION STATEMENT:::
Galaxy Isle was built with the intent of privately bringing hospitalized individuals with mentors into SL to take advantage of the healing power of amusement and learning that can take place in this virtual space. To that end, Galaxy Isle is host to over 30 species of animals in a floating-island wildlife park suspended over a mature event space which is regularly filled with some of SL's most recognizable talent in an effort to spread awareness of the power of virtual worlds on those in need of healing and hopefully inspire its visitors to get involved locally with similar initiatives that breathe a new life, a SecondLife into the minds and hearts of people in pain.
